Luméa
Luméa is a sculptural wooden lamp that explores how form and material can shape the diffusion of light, creating a calm and ambient atmosphere.

Project Duration :
4 weeks

Short Description :
Luméa is a sculptural wooden lamp designed to celebrate light through pure form and material honesty Built without a single piece of metal it relies entirely on walnut veneer and maple to define its character The curved veneer shades create a dynamic play of light and shadow while the walnut-stained stand grounds it with warmth and presence Finished with Osmo oil the lamp highlights the beauty of natural grain transforming a functional object into a crafted statement piece

Design Intent :
I wanted to design a lamp that felt less like a fixture and more like a sculptural object Something that celebrates the natural character of wood while shaping light in a calm and atmospheric way The choice to work only with wood came from a desire to keep the material language pure Walnut veneer offered the flexibility to create soft curves while maple gave structure and strength for the holder By combining them I could explore form and light without relying on metal. The intent was simple create an object that feels crafted honest and warm both when lit and unlit

research and insights :
Before building I looked at how different lamps use form and material to shape atmosphere Most modern lamps rely on metal frames and fabric shades which often hide the material rather than celebrate it, I was more interested in the sculptural qualities of wood and how thin veneer could bend to create organic curves that interact with light.
I studied how light behaves when it passes through layered materials and how shadows and highlights can make a lamp feel alive instead of static I also paid attention to proportion and balance noticing that a lamp works best when the base feels grounded and the shade feels light and dynamic
The insight for me was clear If I treated the lamp as a sculptural object made entirely of wood it could feel both minimal and expressive The material itself would be the story no extra decoration required

Final Outcome
The final lamp came together as a sculptural piece that celebrates light and material honesty The curved walnut veneer shades create soft flowing forms that glow warmly when lit while the maple holder grounds the lamp with strength and balance The surfaces finished with Osmo oil bring out the natural grain and depth of the veneer while the walnut stained stand ties everything together into one continuous language
Because the lamp is built entirely from wood with no metal joints it feels crafted and pure The stacking of veneer layers gives it character in the daytime and atmosphere when switched on at night Luméa is less about function alone and more about presence turning a simple light into an object you want to live with and display

Reflection and Learnings :
Luméa was less about solving and more about feeling I approached it as an experiment with wood and light to see how they could shape each other Working with veneer taught me patience because it only bends to a point before breaking and finishing it showed me how much depth you can get out of a simple surface
The biggest learning for me was that atmosphere comes from restraint The lamp didn’t need extra decoration or hardware to stand out it only needed pure materials and a form that felt natural I also understood how much craft influences outcome every decision from how the veneer was cut to how the stand was stained changed the personality of the lamp
For me Luméa is a reminder that design can also be about curiosity and expression sometimes you don’t need a big problem to justify making something valuable
